Have you ever watched an athlete perform some physical feat so effortlessly that you’ve been tempted to think you could do it yourself? After all, it looked so easy!
In reality, it was only effortless because countless hours of practice had taught every muscle to do exactly what it needed to at exactly the right time. It looked easy because they made it look easy!
The same can be true for interior or exterior painting. If you have worked with either a professional painter or simply someone who is well-practiced, those clean, crisp, effortless lines and smooth strokes can leave you with the deceiving idea that anybody could paint like that without prior experience. The truth is, craftsmen like we have here at Cherry Hill Painting are proud of these carefully acquired skills and are happy to put them to work in homes like yours.
Just in case you haven’t had the benefit of those hours of practice, we thought we’d put together a few tips to help you paint smoother, cleaner lines.
Tips for Cutting In While Painting
- Plenty of lighting – This is no time to be in the dark. Make sure your lighting is plentiful so that you can see exactly what you’re doing.
- Use the right tool for the job – Not just any brush will do. For fine, detail work, use an angled sash brush.
- Use the right grip – A pencil grip (holding the brush with the same general hand position that you would a pencil) will give you the most control.
- Load your brush – A lot of folks use either way too much or way too little paint, and both mistakes can cause trouble. Load about a third of your bristles with paint, then carefully tap the extra off on the side of your container.
- Brush excess paint – Before your fine cutting in work, brush one stroke a couple of inches from where your edge will be. This removes any extra paint, but still leaves you enough to do the detailed brushwork.
Should You Use Painters’ Tape for Cutting In?
There are a lot of great painting products out there! Tape is definitely one of them, but it is important to use this tool efficiently and effectively. For example, using tape to mark off a custom pattern on a wall is ideal. Taping the perimeter of an entire room, however, might just end up costing more time than it’s worth.
