Spring is a wonderful time of year, and especially so after a winter like the one we just experienced. Coming out on the other side of it now and watching the snow retreat has been a pleasure!
Unfortunately, however, the refreshing and revitalizing spring brings with it a typically rainy season. And, while on one hand that means those famous May flowers will be coming along, it also means that the chance for increased moisture and flooding in your basement can become a real threat. This issue becomes even more probable if your home is located on a lower point of your property.
With that in mind, we have put together a few tips for keeping your basement dry this spring.
Swimming Pools Should Be Outside! – How Do You Keep Your Basement Dry?
- Keep your gutters clear – Your gutters are part of a system that was specially-designed to shed and remove excess water. When the system is clogged, it can’t do its job! Take the time to inspect your gutters, removing anything that might be trapped inside and cause a blockage.
- Downspout extensions – Your downspout should extend six or more feet away from your home. If it doesn’t, purchase an extension to hold you over until a permanent upgrade can be made.
- Do you have a sump pump? – If so, make sure that it is clear and in good operating order before the spring thaw begins.
- Fill foundation cracks – Check your foundation for weak points. Cracks can be repaired with an epoxy filler, but if you discover a larger issue be sure to contact a professional.
What Should You Do If You Find Water in Your Basement?
The key is to handle the issue quickly! Water damage is a problem that grows with time, never simply going away on its own. Call a professional to assist with removing the water, then drying your property as a way to stop the progression of damage in its tracks. As needed, repair and replacement is also key before mold and mildew can take root.
