Every climate has features that deteriorate your exterior house paint, from the blistering Arizona sun to the howling Florida hurricanes. Here in New Jersey, we have humid summers and long, cold winters that conspire to attack our home exteriors. Fortunately, exterior paint is formulated to withstand these forces of nature. Of course, it can’t do this forever. How do you know when it is time to repaint your home exterior in New Jersey?
Here are four unmistakable signs.
- Lost adhesion. When your exterior house paint is blistering (showing bubbles under the surface), peeling, flaking off or otherwise coming unstuck, the situation is urgent. The sooner you get the loose paint removed and new paint applied, the less damage there will be. If this problem is allowed to continue, it could lead to major paint failure, wood rot, moisture entry, mold, and other serious issues.
- Discoloration. If the paint on your siding is looking faded or uneven, you will probably want to paint for aesthetic reasons. Even beyond that, however, is the fact that the paint is showing its age. Painting it now will renew the protection of your home, while waiting longer could lead to more serious paint failure, as mentioned above. Sometimes, rather than fading, the paint will begin to have a chalky look and residue, especially on painted metal like garage doors. This is also a warning sign.
- Stains. Do you have any areas where your home is stained and washing won’t remove the marks? Maybe it is where dirt or mildew was left to accumulate too long, or a gutter regularly spills onto the siding. If a scrub brush with detergent won’t restore the shine, it is time to refresh your exterior house paint.
- Dissatisfaction. Are you unhappy with the color or style of your home? That is also an important reason to put exterior painting on your calendar. Refreshing the colors on your home exterior gives you renewed joy and pride in your home, and it keeps up the curb appeal and value.
