Does Interior House Paint Impact Emotions?

We all know that music can have a significant effect on our emotions. Likewise, our emotional state can be swayed by foods, smells, weather, and much more. But what about color? Can interior house paint colors impact the way we feel? Absolutely! While paint colors alone can’t cure depression or crush an optimist, there is a great deal colors can do to promote certain moods or conditions.

Let’s take a look at some common ways that color used in interior house painting can impact the way we feel!

Cheer Up! Positivity with Interior Paint

It might seem obvious, but it is worth beginning with the idea that warmer and brighter colors tend to promote a positive frame of mind. Yellow is a cheerful color, as well as red and orange (the other warm colors). Bright shades of blue, such as aquamarine and teal, are very positive as well, in addition to some green hues, such as lime and mint.

There are all kinds of tasteful, pleasant ways these colors can be incorporated into a room without overwhelming it. For example, you can choose a buttery yellow, rather than a bright dandelion variety. With orange, there are very subtle, pleasant varieties to choose from that don’t make you think of traffic cones!

Stress Buster! Painting a Tranquil Oasis

If you tend to feel a lot of tension or anxiety, you need your home to be a place of calm serenity. Blues are excellent for promoting this effect, whether it is a rich Mediterranean blue, a deep sapphire, or a stately navy. Greens are also very natural and calming, as well as neutral tones like gray, brown, tan, and beige.

Promoting Mental Activity with Interior Paint

Many people find that their ability to do mental work can be helped or hindered with paint colors. One example is that creativity is often enhanced using yellow or purple paints, and blue is especially good for concentration. On the other hand, orange and red can cause anxiety and fear of mistakes, which is probably a mental space you want to avoid!

Keeping Paint Colors under Control

Many of the colors mentioned above would be overwhelming if they adorned every wall of a room. You might end up feeling like you are living inside a key lime pie, or stranded in the Gulf of Mexico with no land in sight! It doesn’t need to be that way, however. Bold, vibrant colors can be incorporated into your interior design without becoming overbearing.

One of the best ways to do this is with an accent wall. If three walls in your room are a neutral hue, the fourth one can really afford to stand out, using a strong color that promotes the mood you want to foster.

Another idea is to use chair rail or wainscoting. This allows you to have one color on the lower portion of the walls, and a different color above.

In addition to interior paint, you can also use artwork, lamps, pillows, throw rugs, and other helpful details to add the desired colors to your space.
