Exterior House Paint Colors: Let the Seasons Guide You

For some of us, choosing exterior house paint colors is an enjoyable process, but for others, it comes with a sense of intimidation or stress. There are so many paint colors to choose from! How do you even begin?

One great way to organize and select your exterior house paint colors is with themes. Some people choose all neutrals (gray, white, black, tan) or all shades of one color (light blue, medium blue, and dark blue). Have you ever considered using the seasons to guide your paint color choices? Read on to find out what that could look like!

How to Use a Season for Paint Color Selection

Each season has some colors we typically associate with it, and it would be easy to imagine a spring house being all bright green and yellow, or a fall house in brilliant orange and red. While some people may like this, it probably will not appeal to most.

Instead of a simplistic, overwhelming approach to color, think of something more subtle. Begin by choosing the main color that will take up most of your home exterior, based on the season of your choice. It does not have to be a bold, standout color. Instead, it can be a subdued, muted tone. For example, instead of bright green, you could go with sage green, forest green, or mint green.

Once you have chosen the dominant color, select your accents. These would typically be brighter, more eye-catching paint colors. A good mix of proportions is 60% (the main color), 30% (the prominent accent color), and 10% (a limited-use accent color). While you can use more than three colors, this can bewilder the eye and overwhelm the senses. Instead, a creative use of three colors provides unity and variety at the same time.

Seasonal House Paint Color Schemes

Spring: Yellow or green would be the most common choices for a dominant spring color, and many other colors can work well with these. Shades of purple, orange, or blue could pair nicely with them.

Summer: Blue and green come to mind first as the typical shades of summer. A sandy tan, a deep navy, or a sunflower yellow would fit this motif as accents, as would a fluffy-cloud white.

Autumn: To subtly evoke the trees of fall, brown would make a great base color, but you could also go with deep red or other fall colors. With these, you could use golden yellow, bright orange, burnt orange, light brown, or red as your accent colors.

Winter: White, gray, or a very light blue make a fitting starting point for a winter motif. Whatever color you chose as the dominant one, use other neutrals for your accents. For example, 60% gray, 30% white, and 10% black. Another winter option could be 60% white, 30% light blue, and 10% dark gray.
