Exterior Painting Tips: Start with a Clean Slate

What is the most important thing to get right in exterior painting? That is a difficult question, since every step is critical to the final outcome. However, working with a clean surface is one of the most important steps, and it is probably the easiest to overlook. Why is cleaning such an important part of exterior house painting? Let’s take a look.

Paint Adhesion Requires a Clean Surface

The main reason to make sure your surfaces are clean prior to painting is that the new paint will not fasten properly to a dirty surface. Our home exteriors are often coated with residues that we can’t see. These could include dust and pollen, air pollutants, smoke or even a light layer of oil or grease. Any of these surface contaminants are likely to prevent new paint from adhering well.

If exterior paint does not have a clean surface to cling to, this can lead to costly, unsightly headaches. Premature paint failure includes peeling, cracking, bubbling and other similar problems.

Surface Dirt Shows Through the Paint

Painting a dirty wall traps all those little (and big) surface contaminants under the new film, where they will be visible as lumps and bumps under the paint. This looks terrible, and the worst part is, each of those bits of dirt, leaves, spider webs, bugs, bird droppings, and so on will continue to be visible, no matter how many times you paint over them.

Clean the wall first, and watch that new paint go on smooth and beautiful!
