Interior Painting Tips: Little Extras that Make a Big Difference

A new coat of paint on your interior walls is an exciting thing; it looks fresh, feels fresh, and even smells fresh! As fun as that is, there are some extra steps you can take to make the end result even better. These little details can take your interior painting project and bring it to the next level of Wow!

Switches and Outlets

If you have old, cracked, dingy, or mismatched light switches or outlets, this is a great time to upgrade them. With just a few dollars and a flathead screwdriver, your newly-painted walls will look sharp and modern!

Make sure you turn off the electricity to the outlets and lights at the breaker box, and test them by plugging something in to make sure they are off. Then, simply remove the old plate cover and switch (or outlet), paying careful attention to what color wires went where. Then, just use the new switch (or outlet) to put it all back together the way you found it. Trust us; the difference it makes is worth the small investment of time and cash!

Caution: When in doubt, call someone with experience to work with electricity. The new look is great, but not at the cost of a shock!

Vent Covers

If you have any old air vent covers, baseboard heaters, or radiators, there’s a good chance they could do with a new look. It just takes a can of spray paint that is intended for metal, plus some tape and newspaper to protect the surrounding surfaces.

First, clean the surface you plan to paint, then tape newspaper to the surrounding surfaces to protect them. Read the instructions on the can for how far away to hold the can as you spray. Use several light coats, rather than trying to coat it thoroughly in one shot. If you can remove the item to a garage or basement space for painting, even better!

With your shiny new metal and your freshly-painted walls, your room will look amazing!

Baseboard Details

When you look at your baseboards, can you see any gaps or cracks where the baseboard is not flush with the wall? You may not really think of these gaps as unsightly until you see what it would look like without them. One subtle line of caulk along that crack has all kinds of benefits.

  • Visually, the caulk fills the gaps so that the baseboard looks more crisp and tidy
  • Structurally, the caulk holds the baseboard so that it is less likely to pull away from the walls
  • Practically, the caulk prevents dirt from building up in that crack, making the spot quicker and easier to clean

If you put the caulk on before you paint, the results will definitely be worth the investment!
