Mildew on Your Siding? Here’s What to Do

Here in New Jersey, mildew is a common problem affecting our home exteriors. Sometimes it just shows up as a mild discoloration, but other times, it can become an obvious green layer. What do you do about it? How do you get rid of mildew on the siding of your New Jersey home?

Step 1: Kill Mildew at the Root

Many homeowners mistakenly believe that if they just spray off the discoloration, the job is done. Unfortunately, even a pressure washer does not fully remove the fungal spores that cause mildew. That is why mildew removal must begin with a fungicidal wash.

Use a garden sprayer to apply your chosen fungicide to the affected surface. You could use a mild solution of bleach and water, or use a commercial fungicidal house wash designed for the purpose. Begin at the bottom and work your way upward, making sure to get every part wet. Let the solution remain on the surface for a little while so it can do its work.

Step 2: Remove the Residue

Now that the mildew is dead, the scummy residue can be washed away. The gentler method for doing this is with a soft bristle brush or a sponge (a brush with a long handle is the most convenient). Use a little bit of dish soap or mild detergent, and lightly scrub the siding. This time, start from the top and work your way down. A garden hose is a great way to rinse off each section after you have scrubbed it.

Another option is to use a pressure washer to clean the siding. This can go faster, but the problem is that pressure washing equipment can be hazardous, potentially causing bodily injury or property damage. It is a better idea to hire a New Jersey exterior painting company to do the pressure washing for you, or hire a commercial pressure washer.

Step 3: Prevent Future Mildew Growth

In order to slow the return of mildew, use a fungicidal house paint the next time you have your home exterior repainted. These antimicrobial paints will keep your home looking fresher for a longer time. Talk to your New Jersey exterior house painting company about the paint that will work best on your home.
