Stained wood is a lovely thing in many settings, but sometimes, change is needed. What do you do when stained wood is looking shabby, outdated, or not matching with the rest of the room? Fortunately, painting over stained wood is definitely possible, as long as you take the right steps and use good products.
Step 1: Remove the Old Finish
Before stained wood can be painted, the glossy protective finish from the prior coating needs to be removed. This can be done in two different ways:
- Chemical stripping agents: these chemicals are harsh, but effective. Be sure to wear gloves and breathing protection, and work in a ventilated area.
- Sandpaper and Sanding Sponges: this takes some elbow grease, but it is a cleaner way to remove the finish. You don’t have to sand down to bare wood; you just need to scuff up the glossy finish so that a new coating can adhere. Use breathing protection.
After you have removed the old coating, make sure you thoroughly clean the surfaces and the work area, so that you don’t get any residue or sawdust in your new coatings.
Step 2: Primer
Use a high-quality primer that is designed for bare wood. Apply one coat, smoothly and evenly. Use a brush for contours and details. On larger surfaces, you can use a brush or a foam roller. Best results are achieved with spray equipment, but this is best done by a professional house painter.
Step 3: Top Coat
Once your primer has dried, apply at least two coats of a high quality interior paint. Latex/acrylic paints are safer and easier to work with, but oil-based paints provide a more durable finish. That said, a good semi-gloss latex/acrylic paint has very good wear and damage resistance.
Step 4: Protective Coating
After you have achieved the visual transformation you wanted, it is time to apply a protective coating. Ask the experts at your local paint store for tips on the best product for your specific painting project.
