Preparing for Guests: Interior Painting Tips

With the holidays approaching quickly, the moment when guests knock at the door is not far off! While you don’t need to start making beds or cooking pies yet, this is a great time to begin some aspects of house preparation. In particular, now is when you should plan any interior house painting, so that it is completed before other preparations begin.

Most of us are not thinking of a full interior repaint to the sake of guests, so where should the focus be? Which painting projects will have the most impact and benefit when the guests arrive? There are two questions that need to be asked at once:

  • What areas will be used or seen by guests?
  • What areas are most in need of painting?

Let’s examine each of those questions in a little more detail.

Interior Painting Where Guests Will Be

When you entertain for the holidays, do you tend to invite people into the kitchen? Or do you prefer serving desserts in the living room? Do you have a dining room where a Thanksgiving or Christmas meal will be served? Food is one of the centerpieces of holiday entertaining, so you will want to give painting priority to the areas where guests will be enjoying those appetizers, meals, desserts and drinks!

Of course, before the guests arrive anywhere else in the house, they come in through the front door and see the entryway. It is important to consider what kind of welcome they receive from your paint as they come in.

Additionally, your guests will probably be using a bathroom while they are in your home. Be sure to give thought to this crucial area as you map out where you want your interior painting.

Finally, any overnight visitors will need a guest room of some sort. Refreshing the paint in the guest bedroom is a wonderful way to give your houseguests a cozy welcome!

Wow, that is a lot of space to think about! Do you need to paint all of it? Not necessarily. That is why we ask the other question…

Evaluating the State of Your Interior Paint

Because we spend so much time in our homes, we often become blind to areas that need attention. Outdated styles or damaged paint don’t stand out when we see them all the time.

What we need is to see the rooms with fresh eyes!

For each space where guests will be, try to see the room with a new perspective. Look more closely at the trim, the baseboards, the open spaces of wall. What do you see? Scuffs? Scrapes? Stains? Outdated colors?

One thing that might help you gain this fresh perspective is to stand or sit in a different part of the room than normal. Additionally, you can bring in an extra source of lighting, and shine it around the room. As you do so, create a priority list of what areas would benefit most from a fresh coat of paint.

Making a Plan

Now that you have thought through which spaces will be used and what areas most need new paint, you can combine the two lists and make your plan. The highest priority should be the rooms where guests will spend significant time and the paint most needs attention. After that, work your way down the list and decide how much you want to tackle.

With the parameters of the painting decided, you can go ahead and call your interior painting company. Schedule your estimate quickly, so your project can get on their schedule before the holidays come!
