Interior house painting is an exciting process, but many people find choosing colors a challenge. They don’t want to make a mistake and end up with new paint they don’t love. How do you avoid this? How do you choose interior house paint colors that will coordinate pleasantly? One great way to help is by using neutrals.
Neutral Does Not Mean Boring
If the term “neutral paint colors” sounds bland and uninteresting, it does not have to be! In fact, many of the most striking and beautiful homes here in New Jersey use an abundance of neutral interior paint. The key is using it creatively and deliberately.
What Are the Neutral Interior Paint Colors?
Strictly speaking, neutral paints are those without color: white, black, and gray. For the purpose of painting home interiors, beige is also included. Beyond this, some light shades of yellow, blue, and even green can function like neutral colors. The key is that a neutral color…
- Does not call too much attention to itself
- Coordinates easily with a wide range of colors
- Is generally lighter in color (effectively ruling out black)
While neutral colors might not be topping the charts for trendy paint choices of the year, this can actually be an advantage. The trendier a paint color is, the sooner it will look outdated. With neutrals, this is far less likely.
Where to Use Neutrals in the Home
Neutral interior paints can be used in any area of the home, but there are some areas where they are an especially good choice.
Foyers and hallways are generally large areas with a lot of wall space. Light neutrals provide a calm, welcoming feel to these spaces without being overwhelming. Also, any rooms that lean towards an open-concept design make good candidates. For example, a living room/dining room area, an eat-in kitchen, and so on. Because the walls are visible from so many rooms and angles, it is helpful to have neutral colored paint that is easy to coordinate with.
You need not limit yourself to neutral paint colors in these places. Bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry rooms, entertainment rooms… no place is inappropriate for neutral tones. However, these kinds of self-enclosed spaces are also places where you can use bolder or more intense colors more easily.
How to Add More Color
If you use a neutral color on your main wall spaces, you will probably want to add some pops of color for visual interest. An accent wall is a wonderful way to do this, but it can also be done with throw pillows, artwork, a table runner, a rug, or an item of furniture.
