Sometimes it seems like quality and price are not necessarily connected. Two cotton t-shirts, for example, could be the exact same quality, but the brand name printed on one makes it cost five times more than the other! Is that how it is with house paints? Are the more expensive ones just overpriced brand names? How much should you pay for house paint?
In the case of most residential paints, the quality of the paint is directly connected to the price you pay. That is because cheaper paints use more fillers that lead to an inferior result, while quality paints include more of the essential ingredients that really do the job right!
Ingredients in House Paint
Most house paints these days are water-based formulas, including acrylic and acrylic latex paints. The water is included as a solvent, keeping the paint in liquid form until it is applied to the wall. As the water evaporates, the paint dries and all of the other ingredients are left as a thin film on the wall.
Budget paints use a higher proportion of water, meaning the film that is left behind is thinner. In contrast, premium paints use more binders and pigments (more on that in a moment), which means each coat of paint is thicker, richer, and longer-lasting. Yes, these ingredients cost more, but they also give a far superior result.
Another way that budget paints reduce their cost is by using cheap fillers. Clay is one example, though there are others. These fillers give the paint a grittier texture, and they have less hiding power than quality pigments, which contain titanium dioxide or iron oxide. High quality house paints have the ability to hide prior colors and create beautiful new colors in fewer coats.
Binders are the glue that causes paint to hold together, and to hold to the wall. Quality paints use better binders and a higher proportion of them, meaning your paint will resist wear and weather for a longer time.
Is Premium House Paint Worth the Cost?
While the cost of quality interior paints and premium exterior paints is greater, the benefits are generally worth the cost:
- Fewer coats of paint needed to achieve the desired result (meaning fewer cans of paint to purchase)
- Longer life of the paint job (meaning less frequent need for painting)
- Richer colors and more uniform coverage (meaning more pleasure for you when you look at it!)
Sometimes, paying more is a worthwhile investment. When it comes to house paint, that is definitely the case!
