Will Your Exterior Paint Survive the Coming New Jersey Winter?

New Jersey Exterior Painting

The signs are everywhere that summer is ending and the autumn beginning. Back to school supplies, apple picking, and the mysterious feel of fall in the air. While many of us love the fall, it is also a reminder that winter is around the corner. As we enter a new season, it is important that we prepare our homes for the coming of winter. Your house protects you from the harsh elements—cold winds, snow, freezing temperatures, sleet—all winter long. At Cherry Hill Painting we want to protect your house from those same elements, by keeping the exterior paint in good shape.

Warning Signs that Your Exterior Paint Needs Attention

You can inspect your house to see if there are indications that your exterior paint is not ready for winter weather. Here are key things to look for.

Fading: When the original color of your exterior paint begins to fade, it is an early warning sign that your paint is close to failing.

Chalking: Sometimes old paint will begin build up a chalky residue which also indicates that the paint is wearing thin and may not continue to seal out moisture.

Cracking: You may find small, hair-line cracks in your paint. This is another early indicator of paint failure.

Peeling: If paint is more severely worn out, you may find that it is bubbling or peeling and flaking off. This will cause obvious problems as it leaves the material underneath exposed to the elements.

If your paint is showing any of these signs of aging or failing, you will want to call your painter to have the issue addressed before winter weather arrives. Touching up paint is a small and inexpensive job, but if you leave it too long you may be facing much larger projects and expenses to repair damage.

Gutters and Caulk

Once you have looked at your home’s exterior paint, it is also definitely a good idea to check your gutters and caulking, both of which also serve to protect your home from water damage and winter weather.

Gutters—Your gutters and downspouts should be clear of debris and not overflowing or leaking. They should carry water safely away from your home, not allowing it to pool or puddle up near your house. If you are not able to safely inspect your gutters and downspouts, or are not sure if they are functioning properly, be sure to contact a professional who can make sure your gutters are clean and ready to keep your house protected from water damage.

Caulk—Most windows and doors have caulk around the edges of the frames to seal the crack against moisture, cold, and insects. Caulk does this job well, but it doesn’t always last a long time. It’s a good idea to check the caulk around your windows and doors for signs of aging. Has it become brittle or cracked? If your caulk is no longer in good condition, your house painter can easily refresh the caulk around your doors and windows so that you will not have unwelcome leaking, drafts, or insects.
