Painting a Child’s Bedroom – Interior Painting Advice

Most children spend a significant amount of time in their bedrooms, whether they are playing, studying, or reading. Of course, it is also where they fall asleep, wake up, and get dressed. It makes sense, then, that parents want their children’s rooms to be comfortable and pleasant. That is why we wanted to provide you with some ideas and advice for painting a child’s bedroom.

The first concern to think about with interior painting is safety, then we will discuss some color and design ideas.

Safety Considerations with Interior Paint

None of us would ever want to put a child’s health at risk for the sake of interior design, so it is important that we begin with safety. If you live in a New Jersey home built prior to 1978, it is likely to have lead paint on the walls. Additionally, homes built in 1980 or earlier are likely to contain asbestos in their popcorn ceilings.

As long as these materials remain undisturbed on the walls and ceilings, they are not actually harmful. However, if the paint begins flaking or peeling off, or if the popcorn texture is damaged, it can release these harmful substances into the home environment. This also happens when there is any scraping, sanding, cutting, or modification of walls/ceilings with lead or asbestos.

If you live in a New Jersey home that may contain lead or asbestos, you need to have a properly certified painting contractor do any repairs or redecorating. This house painter can safely remove or encapsulate the materials so they do not cause any harm.

Another health concern is the VOC’s in the paint. VOC stands for volatile organic compound, and traditional interior house paints all used to contain them. Now, most paint manufacturers make excellent paints with little or zero VOC’s. These healthier paints have much less odor, and are often referred to as “eco-friendly” paints.

Paint Color Ideas for Kids’ Rooms

One way to narrow down your interior paint color choices for a child’s room is by thinking about what kind of mood you want to promote. Cooler colors like blue, green, and gray will help towards inducing tranquility and focus. On the other hand, warmer colors like yellow, red, pink, and orange tend towards energy and cheerfulness.

It is also important to be influenced (but not ruled) by the desires and preferences of the child(ren) who will live in the room. There are two safe ways to do this:

  • Choose a range of options that you consider acceptable, and let the child choose from among them.
  • Ask the child for two or three favorite color suggestions, and then look for a shade of one of those colors that you think will work well.

Extra Paint Tips for Kids’ Bedrooms

What if your child loves a specific color that would be too overwhelming on the walls of a whole room? Consider using that color on one accent wall, and then the rest of the walls could be a pleasant neutral, such as tan, gray, or beige.

If you want to give your child a chance to express him/herself artistically, you could consider using chalkboard paint or whiteboard paint to create a reusable canvas on a part of a wall.

There are also limitless ways in which you could apply stripes, checkers, a team logo, a wallpaper border, or any number of other decorative options. A quick image search on your phone or computer can provide you with more ideas than you could dream of!
