The powder room, the restroom, the water closet, the loo… whatever name you call it by, we all want bathrooms that are fresh and clean. Giving your bathroom a fresh coat of paint will have it looking and feeling like a brand-new room. Whether you are doing a full bathroom renovation, with shiny new countertop and glistening faucets, or you are doing a quick refresh with a new coat of paint, you will need to ask the same question. What kind of paint should I use in my bathroom?
Painting a Full Bath or Half Bath
If the bathroom you are painting is a full bath (with a shower or tub in it), you will want to choose a paint sheen that has some gloss to it. The most common choices are semi-gloss or satin. Semi-gloss or satin paints will have enough water resistance to help them stand up against the damp atmosphere. You will want to avoid a flat or eggshell paint sheen in the bathroom, as those will absorb water and start to deteriorate more quickly. However, if you are painting a half bath, without a shower or tub, there will be less moisture in the air, and you could use an eggshell finish if you prefer the look of a flatter paint.
Painting a High-moisture Bathroom
There are paints that are specially designed for high-moisture areas or bathrooms. If your bathroom has a good vent fan, you will not usually need a high-moisture paint. If your bathroom is not vented well, or is prone to heavy levels of moisture, you may want to consider using a paint that is designed for bathroom use or to withstand high humidity. You may also want to consider using a paint that has a mold-resistant additive to help keep mildew or mold from developing in moist areas.
Cleanable Paint
Another consideration in choosing a paint for your bathroom is how cleanable the surface will be. It is common to use semi-gloss for trim in bathrooms. This will make the surface easy to wipe and clean. If you are concerned about your walls being easy to wipe and having the paint hold up to cleaning, semi-gloss could be good choice for your walls as well. However, satin is a popular sheen choice for walls, and a high-quality satin paint is generally also wipeable.
